Preliminary task

AS opening sequence

Monday 21 March 2011

The tiltle sequence has a black bagroud with text written on it, a white light then flashes in the middle of the background which creates a spooky impression. This music starts to pick up pace and then the camera shows a shot of a darl lighted tunnel. We then see a vehicl approaching , there are several shots of the vehicle high/low angles are used. However we are unable to se the charcter driving it which shows mysteriousness. Two characters are then introduced, they speak at a low slow pace. During the underwter scene the music changes because the characters are in danger, there is also fast pace editing used because of the situation this also creates more tension. Throughout most of the scene the characters are shown in dark lighting which hides the identity from the audience

the film starts of in a car, we are unable to see the characters face because of dark lighting, this shows like a hoorr film mysteriousness. We are also unsure of were the location is because the background too is dark. The voice in the car also causes mysteriousness because at first we cannot see who is speaking, the voice speaks at a slow pace. During the scene in the house the music changes, also we do not understand what the characters purpose is. Facial expressions of the couple in the room are shocked and represents them as afraid. The camera then zooms out of the house while leaving the chracter who was speaking in the begining unseen in the opening creating more mystery. The dark setting sets the thrill of the film while the audience is left wondering what is going on

The film starts of in black and white the soundtrack is also slow which builds up tension. There is dark use of lighting in many of shots such as the locker hallway, this implies tpo the audeience that the film could be of a horror genre. The characters which are shown are only showed through dark lighting which creates a sense of mystery. The music then changes whilst the characters our in the van, however its broken to less charasmatic music and then silence which disrupts the audience and gets them to believe something is going to happen.

The sound track in the background in the traffic scene is light hearted which makes the situation seem less serious. Furthermore the body language and facial expression of the police women would suggest that she is represeted as not bothered which suits the genre o comedy. The motor bike scene shows how the male charcetr is represented as clumsy. The use of close up shot on his face shows the terrified look on his face. This used with the soundrack makes tha audience understand its humour rather than take it serious. A classic shot of a crowds reation to something is used, this is normally used in lots of comedy films which shows that it is a typical code. The opeming scenes are taking outdoors which have lots of lighting which helps add to the vibrant scene

Evaluation question two

Question 2

Our media product represents quite a few social groups due to our character.

Our Charater Is:
- A young blakc male
- A "Geek" he's smart and intellectual
- Company receptionist who works from home
- Mentally unstable - split personality
- American

The first social group represnted is young black males because the character himself is a young black male, however this can expand to all males aged 18-35 with different ethnic backgrounds because they are the main target audience. By choosing a black young character i think we managed to represent more social groups because typically the main character in a psychological thriller is a middle-aged white man.

We represent the "geeks" by the setting and mise in scene elements. The setting is an office with a lot of paper-work and books and the character is seen sleeping there showing that he's most probably tired from working. the character is also wearing a shirt and tie, which makes him look smart, and glasses which makes most people will immediately think hes a geek. The character is also lonely and most "geeks" seem to be lonely most of the time. Another social group represented is working men because the character is shown in an office.

The final social group represented is Americans of all ages and gender. This is because all americans were affected in someway be the terrorist attacks "9/11".

I found the use of camera in this opening very interesting because it starts off with a medium shot and then James bond shoots his pistol at the screen and the camera shows a POV shot from the target. The whole opening is animated which makes it very interesting to watch and engages the audience.
The background music is upbeat as it is an action film and the lyrics "If you take a life, do you know what you'll get?", link to the narrative.
The narrative is made clear in the opening sequence because there's a lot of action through shooting and fighting which makes it clear that it's an action film.
The title "Casino Royale" is matched by the animated background of decks of cards and guns firing 'clubs' instead of bullets and also people breaking into diamonds.
We are also introduced to the main chracter straight away.

Evaluation question one

In what ways does your media product USE, DEVELOP or CHALLENGE forms and conventions of real media products?

We used forms and conventions of real media by; having opening credits and titles, introducing the audience to the setting,  introducing the character to the audience, introducing the narrative without giving too much away , showing the main themes and also having some background music to entertain the audience.

Our film is a psychological thriller and it does follow the typical codes and conventions of previous films however it does also challenge the typical codes and conventions of this genre.
Our film follows the codes and conventions of a psychological thriller due to the way it is opened. We opened the film without giving away too much information to the audience which leaves them asking questions about narrative and also interested enough to keep watching.
We also have some abstract credits which is a typical feature of psychological thriller.
However we also do challenge the codes and conventions of a psychological thriller because of the element of conspiracy in wanting to know who’s actually behind the attacks.

The character follows the typical codes and conventions because he’s a male who has a split personality. He’s quite disturbed and the audience doesn’t get any information about the character. Our character has a premonition showing an attack on the world trade centre which is like the character from “Donnie Darko” who has visions that the world is coming to an end. We also have only one main character which is a typical feature of a psychological thriller for example 'Phone-booth' in which for the majority of the film the main character is filmed in just a phone booth.
The way we challenged the codes and conventions of the character is that he’s a young black male and there’s no dialogue from the character. Typically psychological thrillers will have a white middle aged man starring.

The narrative follows the codes and conventions of psychological thrillers due to the premonition which gives the psychological element. This is also seen in “Donnie Darko” and also “Déjà vu”.
The narrative challenges the codes and conventions because there’s also crime and conspiracy involved with the terrorist attacks.

The setting follows the codes and conventions of a psychological thriller because it’s a small, dark confined space. This lets the audience know what the character is like  because the books and papers show that he is intellectual also the darkness shows that the character is quite mysterious . We only used one setting which is just like 'Phone-booth'.

Evaluation question five

We attracted our audience by using the typical codes and conventions of psychological thrillers because the audience are already familiar with them and they are more likely to enjoy it.

The audience is attracted by the way the film opens in a dark office. This gains their attention immediately because they begin to think what is going to happen next and it also creates tension because darkness is normally associated with trouble.

The camera then pans revealing the main character who wakes up quite dramatically and then goes into a state, falling unconscious. Whilst unconscious the character then has a premonition in which hes wearing a strait-jacket and locked up in asylum.
This attracted the audience because they know that the character is mentally unstable and unpredictable which makes them think what did he do for him to end up in asylum. At this moment the audience is fully engaged and they are more likely to keep watching to find out what happened.

The background music also attracts the audience because it's quite creepy which adds to the tension and also makes the audience aware that something is about to take place because typically in a psychological thriller the music builds up to some action.
The voice over also attracts the audience because it reveals what has happened and is the explanation to the drawing by the character.

Basing the narrative on a real life event also attracted the audience because it's an event known world-wide  and very controversial to this day. Since the '9/11' attacks there has been a lot of conspiracy theories and theres still a doubt about who was actually behind the attacks and the American government have been accused of orchestrating these attacks which makes it even more interesting.

In all i think that we were successful in attracting the audience because we challenged the typical codes and conventions of a psychological thriller and also followed them .
We also received some positive feedback after showing it to fellow students which told us that we had been successful in attracting the audience.

Evaluation question four

Who would be the audience for your media product?

Primary audience profile:

The target audience for our film was males aged 18 – 35.
The ethnic background of the target audience is American therefore the demographics of the target audience is America.
The lifestyle of the target audience is likely to be either family oriented or single, working possibly and men who enjoy ‘macho’ things such as going to the pub and watching football and basketball etc with their friends.

We chose this as our target group firstly because psychological thrillers usually have a male character starring and they generally appeal more to males more than they do to female. Also psychological thrillers normally have an element of crime or danger with a bit of action which appeals to our target audience.
The reason why we focused on an American target audience is that the film relates to them because of the terrorist attacks that happened on the world trade center in New York. All Americans would have been affected by the attacks in one way or another which is why it would attract them more than a non American audience and they fit in to the genre of our film.

Our target audience would be interested in watching films such as; “Phone booth”, “Donnie Darko” which are psychological thrillers and also action films such as “Die Hard”. The reason why I think that our target audience would be interested in these films is because these are the sort of films which are targeted at our target audience.

In the last six months our target audience would have seen movies such as “Salt”, “The A-team”, and “Unstoppable”.

The target audience is likely to go to the cinema at night during the week or the weekend due to work and other commitments. Also the movies the target audience is most likely to watch are shown at later times.

Secondary audience profile:

Both Genders aged 18-55
Different ethnicities
Same sort of lifestyle as primary audience
The secondary audience will have the same interest in films as the primary and also would have recently watched the same films as the primary audience in the last six months.

The age of the secondary audience is much more varied because theres elements of our film which appeal to more than one type of audience. Theres a range in ethnicity because this event was televised and reported globally and to this day is still a controversial subject attracting a wider audience. The secondary audience also includes both genders because women may also be interested.

Evaluation question 3

Q3
What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?

A film distributor is an independent company, a subsidiary company or occasionally an individual, which acts as the final agent between a film production company, and a film exhibitor, to the end of securing placement of the producer's film on the exhibitor's screen. In the film business, the term "distribution" refers to the marketing and circulation of movies in theatres, and for home viewing (DVD, Video-On-Demand, Download, Television etc).

The path a film takes to be distributed:
• Someone has an idea for a movie.
• They create an outline and use it to promote interest in the idea.
• A studio or independent investor decides to purchase rights to the film.
• People are brought together to make the film (screenwriter, producer, director, cast, crew).
• The film is completed and sent to the studio.
• The studio makes a licensing agreement with a distribution company.
• The distribution company determines how many copies (prints) of the film to make.
• The distribution company shows the movie (screening) to prospective buyers representing the theaters.
• The buyers negotiate with the distribution company on which movies they wish to lease and the terms of the lease agreement.
• The prints are sent to the theaters a few days before the opening day.
• The theater shows the movie for a specified number of weeks (engagement).
• You buy a ticket and watch the movie.
• At the end of the engagement, the theater sends the print back to the distribution company and makes payment on the lease agreement.

Our film is a low budget, independent film so its very unlikely to attract huge ‘Hollywood’ distribution companies such as 20th Century Fox who distributed ‘Avatar’ in countries such as Germany and Argentina.
There is however some distribution companies which are there especially for independent films in the U.K. such as ‘Dogwoof’ who aim to distribute and support fresh talent from independent film makers just like us.
Another way to distribute our film would be through blogs and websites such as ‘Youtube’ and ‘Facebook’. This is a very good form of distribution for independent films because its free to distribute and also the audience do not have to pay and they are also able to comment and give feedback and hopefully the film will spread through word of mouth.
Film festivals would also be a good way of distribution because they are cheap and normally attract huge audiences. In the U.K there is a film festival called ‘Raindance’ which is just for independent films and takes place in central London. This would be a useful way for our to distribute our

Evaluation question six

Q6
What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

Before we started filming we had to perform a camera check-list:

• Open up tripod bag and remove tripod
• Adjust the tripod to suit the camera persons height
• Adjust and make sure the spirit level on the tripod is correct
• Place the camera on top of the tripod locking in the shoehorn
• Insert the battery and then the cassette into the camera
• Turn on the camera to setting ‘A’ which stands for automatic
• Open up the viewfinder
• Start filming

We used the Canon XAHi camera during filming. We had learnt how to setup and use the camera in previous lessons so I was quite familiar with this.

We used the Libec L8200 tripod to take most of our shots. This helped us to take steady shots and also use tilts and different angle shots. Setting up the tripod was not easy to begin with but with practice I became confident enough to be able to do it.

We used the A sennheiser microphone was used-we also used the windshield in order to block out breathing being hear due to the sensitivity of the mic (I also learnt however that microphones often pick up unwanted sound and camera sound)

After the filming process we started to edit, we used software called Adobe Premier CS4. We were given a Lacie drive which is just like a usb or hard disk and a firewire lead to connect the camera to the computer.
Once the camera was connected to the computer we started choosing the best shots we had and cutting any takes which we didn’t need. This process is called digitising and it helped to show us how much useful footage we actually have.
After digitising our shots we had to put them in order and make sure that the order makes sense. This was quite easy because all our shots were in order and numbered due to the shooting schedule.
Once the sequence was in order we started changing shots, either making them longer or making cuts. We also started to add effects such as fades and we had to remove all sound from filming because we used a voice over.

Evaluation question seven

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

Preliminary Brief: Film and edit a character opening a door, crossing a room and sitting down in a chair opposite another character. A couple of lines of dialogue must then exchange between characters & match on action, shot/reverse shot and the 180-degree rule should be demonstrated.

Main task: The titles and opening of a new fiction film, to last a maximum of two minutes (all video and audio material must be original, produced by candidates, with the exception of music or audio effects from a copyright-free source)

What I’ve learnt from the preliminary task:

For the preliminary task I was put in a group with Kevin and Safa.
Our first task was Pre-production which consisted of research and planning. As part of the planning we had to make a storyboard. The storyboard was helpful because it enabled us to see how our film is going to come out (shots, characters etc) although it’s on paper. We also researched movie storyboards and we managed to find the storyboard from ‘The Dark Night’ which was good because it showed us how the professionals do it. We also had to make a shooting schedule which was basically a timetable to show what shot we should be filming and where at a certain time. This helped us too keep management of time and if we were running late or ahead of time we could see by referring to the shooting schedule. We also had a script to help out the character to remember their lines and for rehearsals. The group also made a script to make sure the characters know what to say and when to say it and a shooting schedule to help time management and ensure we know what to do at what time and there’s no confusion.
During production I was the Actor, Kevin was the director and Safa was the camera person.
Post production consisted of editing which was putting all our best shots into a sequence to make a finished product. Unfortunately I didn’t use the editing software as much as I should have so I didn’t really learn how to edit using Adobe premier CS4.

What I’ve learnt from the main task:

I worked with Safa, Alex and Abdul.
I found that pre-production for the main task was much more work than it had been in the preliminary task so it took much more time.
Unlike in the preliminary task we had to make a location recce. This was a list of all the locations which we wanted to use with pictures and also a description. The locations which we had in mind were the history office and the music room. We chose the history office because it was already setup meaning we didn’t need to bring props to dress up the set as we would have if we chose the music room. We had to draw a storyboard which was basically our film on paper. This showed the shots we planned to take, camera angles and what will be happening in every shot, shot by shot. The storyboard had to be done more than once to ensure it was up to scratch. Once again we used a script which was longer than the one in the preliminary task and also a shooting schedule.
We also had to a lot of research into our chosen genre. We looked at opening sequences from films such as ‘Donnie Darko’, which helped because we found out the codes and conventions of films in our genre which then helped us to decide how we would use, follow or challenge these typical codes and conventions.
During production I was Actor once again but we swapped roles so I became assistant director and also worked on continuity.
I was much more actively involved in the editing this time round and I am now comfortable with the software and I can use it with ease.

What I’ve learnt from the start of the preliminary task to now:

I learnt how to use the Canon XAHi camera in the prelim task however in the main task I managed to develop my skills and I’m much more confident using the camera than I was at the beginning. I can also setup a tri-pod correctly which is harder than people think because although it may look correct it might actually be incorrect. I can now edit videos using Adobe premier CS4 which is an achievement because I had never used or even heard of this software before. Overall I now know how to construct a film from pre- production to post-production.
